Frances Lewis

July 16, 1939 — March 19, 2023

Frances Bernice Lewis passed into the arms of her Savior on Sunday, March 19, 2023 in College Station, Texas after a battle with cancer.   An only child, Bernice was born on July 16, 1939 in Dallas, Texas to Frances and Melvin Klofanda.  She was raised by her beloved Aunt Lovie and Uncle Mac Mikeska in Grand Prairie, Texas.  She earned her B.A. from Angelo State University and her Masters of Education from Texas A&M University.  A gifted and loving teacher, Bernice taught special education in New Mexico and Texas for over 20 years.  She met Durwood Lewis on a blind date at the Texas A&M vs. Texas football game in 1958.  They were married for over 62 years with nary a dull moment.

Bernice was a devoted and patriotic Air Force wife, a passionate supporter of POW and MIA families, and a pivotal organizer for Republican Party elections in Brazos County.  Bernice loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  She was an avid cat lover and knitter, and an advocate for the vulnerable.  She poured her heart into everything she held dear.

She is survived by her husband, Durwood Lewis, her son Durwood Lee Lewis and wife Cinda from Lexington, TX, her son Mike Lewis and wife Debbie from Colleyville, TX her 4 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.  Sweet lady, we will miss your big and loving heart.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on April 1, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Christ Church in College Station, TX.  Memorial contributions may be made to any of the following charities: Texas A&M Foundation at www.txamfoundation.com, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org, or Samaritan’s Purse at www.samaritanspurse.org.
