Darrell was born in Edinburg, Texas, on February 19, 1954, to Calvin Herman Smith and Helen Marcella Sherrell Smith. He grew up in Edcouch, Texas, graduating from Edcouch-Elsa High School in 1972.  He attended Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, Texas, earning an Associate Degree in Entomology. He lived and worked in several places in Texas, including Caldwell, Donna, McAllen, and Santa Rosa. He moved from South Texas to retire in Marquez, Texas.

Darrell was a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and American Paint Horse Association (APHA). Hunting in South Texas was a favorite past time. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching his grandchildren show rabbits at local fairs, and attending their sporting events. Darrell was an exhibitor at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show (RGVLS) when in high school, which led him to volunteer for many years at the RGVLS in the Shop Exhibit and at the RGVLS Annual Horse Show. He had a love for animals, especially his horses and his dog Judy.

Darrell is survived by his daughter Monica Johnson and husband Mike, of Caldwell, TX; a son Cooper Koch and husband Todd, of Dallas, TX; grandchildren Logan Griffin, Sterling Johnson, and Claire and Mason Koch.  Other surviving family members include his sister Lois Shull and husband Richard of Donna, TX: a niece Christi Shull of San Antonio; his stepmother Rosemary Smith of San Antonio; and 3 stepsisters Karen (Mike) Penbrook, Shally Brady, and Elly Ramsay, all of San Antonio, as well as several step-nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father Calvin Smith and mother Helen Smith Flora, his sister Pamela Smith, and stepfather Stan Flora.
