William “Billy” Broaddus, 88, of Caldwell was called home by his Lord and Savior on June 24, 2018 at his home in Caldwell surrounded by his loving family. Services are set for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Caldwell, with Bro. Steve Johnson and Deacon John Young officiating. Interment will follow at Masonic Cemetery, with military honors provided by VFW Post #4458. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 29, 2018 at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell.
Billy was born January 29, 1930 in Temple, Texas to Murray Frank Broaddus and Ray (James) Broaddus.
He graduated Class of 1947 from Caldwell High School, and then Class of 1956 from Texas A&M. Following his completion of study at A&M he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army and served in the Artillery. In 1960, Billy opened Minimax Supermarket. In 1966 he began his service with the City of Caldwell, serving 10 years on the City Council as Alderman. In 1976, he was elected Mayor of Caldwell and served in that capacity for 12 years until 1988. In 1986 the City Council asked him to likewise assume the role of City Administrator and served in that position for 21 years until his retirement in 2007. During his tenure with the city, Billy was most active in many improvements in Caldwell; paving of streets, new water capacity and transmission and the last one, of which he was most proud of; The Caldwell Civic Center and Davidson Creek Park.
During the years, Billy was active in many local and regional activities: Past President and Director of Caldwell Chamber of Commerce, Past President of Caldwell Rotary Club, Past Member of the Board of Directors of the Burleson County Fair Association, Past Member of the Board of Directors of the Burleson County Industrial Foundation, Past Member of the Board of Directors of Brazos Mental Health, Past Member of the Board of Directors of Brazos Valley Council of Government, Past Member of the Caldwell Voluntary Fire Department, Member of the Board of Directors of the Caldwell Cemetery Association, Member of the First Baptist Church of Caldwell, served in excess of 50 years as a Deacon, served many years as a Sunday School Teacher, many of these as a teacher of the J.D. Watson Men’s Bible Class, heavily involved in athletics as noted by his 40+ years as announcer for the Caldwell Hornet Football.
Billy was survived by his wife of 12 years, Frances Broaddus of Caldwell; daughter, Sandy Malone and husband Joel of Ft. Worth; step-daughter, Paula Lina of Austin; step-son, Tony Schroeder of Caldwell; grandchildren, Jennifer Fisher and husband Mike, Michael Malone and wife Loretta, Ashlee Felder and husband Mark; step-grandchildren, Tyler Schroeder, Abigail Schroeder; great grandchildren, Cade Fisher, Grace Fisher, Cole Fisher, Caroline Fisher, Eliana Felder, Owen Felder, Julia Malone, Claire Malone, Audrey Malone; sister and brother-in-law, Ray Ann and Dan Alford; sister-in-law, Dorothy Broaddus; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Murray James Broaddus, his first wife Clair Lynn Broaddus; and step-daughter, Michelle Schroeder.
The greatest pride and joy of his life was his family.
The family requests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church in Caldwell or to the VFW Post #4458.
