Susan Denise Dawkins Sager (69) of Somerville, Texas passed at home surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, March 22. Susan was born on July 7, 1956, in Charleston, South Carolina to Chadwick and Belva Dawkins. She spent 30 plus years working for Houston Lighting & Power (Reliant Energy), as an Abstractor/Right of Way Agent. After retirement, she spent another 5 years working at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Spring, Texas.
Susan had a servant’s heart, volunteering for much of her life, with the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo working with carnival ticket sales and as a Court Appointed Child Advocate. She and her family worked through HL&P’s volunteering program, earning the Volunteer Family of the Quarter in 1996 as well as a time volunteering on their own; delivering food to the unhoused and impoverished, delivering box fans to needy families during summertime, building & restoring homes with Habitat for Humanity, Texas Civil War Museum curating at the Somerville Historical Society & Museum.
Susan loved history. She was an avid genealogist, regularly going to cemeteries throughout the south to find past relatives. She was a part of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Magnolia Rangers Chapter out of Humble. As part of the UDC, she and her husband, Mark, participated in Civil War reenactments and historical marker dedications throughout the state of Texas. She loved the beach, often remembering her days as a child going to Folly Beach in Charlston, while eating crab and boiled peanuts. This love for the ocean continued into parenthood, frequenting the beaches with her family in and around Galveston, TX, as well as the occasional beach house rental.
She was very sociable. She and Mark regularly participated in both Chili and BBQ cookoffs with HL&P. She also loved music, especially live music. Susan and Mark spent a lot of time traveling around Texas to see Jerry Jeff Walker and Jack Ingram, among others. They volunteered their time managing music stages at the Houston International Festival.
Preceded in death by her mother and father, Susan is survived by her husband, Mark Sager (68) of Somerville, and her brother, Chad Dawkins (73) of Cottondale, FL.
