Matilda Orozco

March 14, 1934 — December 3, 2022

Somerville

Matilda Maldonado Orozco passed away peacefully on December 3, 2022.  Visitation will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022, at 11 am at St Ann’s Catholic Church in Somerville, Texas with the Holy Rosary at 1 pm followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 2 pm.

Matilda was born March 14, 1934, to Pablo and Natividad Orozco in Somerville, Texas. She graduated from Somerville High School in 1955, she and several sisters left country life for life in the big city, Houston.  She immediately began her dental hygienist career, loyally working for 40 years for Dr Sarabia.  Faithful servant that she was, she attended St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church for over 40 years.  She felt blessed to go on various trips to the Holy Land, Jerusalem, Rome and Vatican City.  She enjoyed her day off, Thursdays, to go shopping.

She loved the mall and shopping was a real hobby for her.  After retirement she volunteered at the church resale shop, more shopping to be done, and “ran the streets” with her loved companion, Peter Barrera, power walked the mall and enjoyed eating out.  In her remaining years, she returned to Somerville to be close to her siblings.  Though she had no children of her own, she doted on her nephews and nieces and was very proud of all their accomplishments.

She will dearly be missed by those same nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces and a host of family. We will miss her warm smile, contagious laugh and caring ways.  But we know she can now rest.

Matilda is preceded in death by her parents, brothers; Cruz, Leon, Manuel and Angel, her half-brothers; Valentin and George and sisters Ernestina Reyes and Timotea Barrera.

She is survived by sister and brother-in-law Simona and Manuel Esparza of Houston and sister Agripina Fonseca of Somerville.  Nephews and nieces: Michael Esparza, Theresa Esparza, Phillip Paul Barrera and wife Carrie Barrera, Renee McCoy and husband Mike McCoy, and Veronica Orozco.  Her great nephews and great nieces Taylor Barrera, Kaitlyn Barrera, Hunter Muzny, Kelsea Muzny and Isabel Salcido.

Pallbearers include Michael Esparza, Phillip Paul Barrera, Taylor Barrera, Hunter Muzny, Domingo Orozco.
