What is a life? Days, weeks, months, moments, disasters, adventures, one right after the other. Some even simultaneously. Some fun. Some sad. Some easy. Some hard. But a life well lived? How is that defined? Who’s measuring stick do you use – the world’s, God’s, your own?
Glen Herbert Hill entered this world on January 5th, 1940, in Corpus Christi, Texas. The second son for Ann Marie Baker, but the only child for Herbert Oklahoma Hill. He had one half-brother, Gene Douglas Johnson Hill and all have preceded him in death. He grew up in the Rosenberg – Richmond area of Texas.
Dad told many stories about his life as we grew up. He said when he was eight years old, he asked his parents for a bike. Their reply, “You want a bike? Go get a job.” So, he did. He had many jobs after the first one and never asked his parents for another thing after that. He did it himself. He delivered newspapers then later sold advertising for the Fort Bend Herald Coaster. He had his own used car lot at age 13. He was a wrecker driver, short order cook at the Rose Drive Inn, worked at the Cole Theater, police officer for the city of Rosenberg, deputy sheriff for Fort Bend County and later a dispatcher after he retired from the USAF. He spent a little over 24 years serving in the USAF in Aircraft Maintenance, Logistics and Maintenance, and USAF Special Ops as an Officer. He did many side jobs very well that pissed a few countries off, but God protected him and had the final say when his life would end. It did on June 11, 2025, at his home in Snook, Texas, just as he wanted (with his legs crossed just like he told the nurse he would.)
He was married twice, both times for thirty years. First to Dorothy Psencik in February of 1963, and they had two daughters, Laura Hopp and Lisa Boatwright. Dorothy preceded him in death in March of 1993. He married Jane Margaret Kocurek in December 1993, and she also preceded him in death in September of 2023. Jane brought two children of her own to the union, Christopher Ward and Sabrina Greenlea, but they had no children together. He was blessed with five grandchildren Matthew Hill, Luke Patterson, Dorothy Jane Patterson, Joshua Hopp, and Katie Hopp and a step-grandchild Devin Ward. He was doubly blessed with a great-granddaughter, Silvia Hopp, or “Toots” who brought him joy in the last few months with us.
He was a learned man graduating from Lamar High School in Rosenberg, Texas in 1958, Wharton County Junior College in 1960. He completed a BBA at the University of Houston in 1963. He graduated from Squadron Officer School F64 Class 68A in 1968 with various other courses completed between and after this, including an MBA in 1974 from Troy University. He believed that there is nothing that you cannot learn how to do.
He was a Christian, having accepted Christ and being baptized at First Baptist Church in Rosenberg around age 12. He loved singing in the choir and was greatly saddened when Parkinsons Disease took his voice. He taught Sunday School, Discipleships courses, and preached while in Somalia. He enjoyed leading several nursing home ministries, visitation, evangelism, drama and play productions, among other things. His hobby was serving God as best he could where in the world he was.
