Emma Vela, a cherished and beloved member of her community, peacefully passed away on April 19, 2026, in Bryan, Texas. Born on December 28, 1938, Emma graced the world for nearly 88 years, leaving behind a legacy rich in love, creativity, and faith.
Emma was known for her joyful spirit and her passion for collecting trinkets—each small treasure a testament to her appreciation for the little wonders in life. A devoted member of her church, she found comfort and purpose within its embrace. Her hands, ever busy and skilled, delighted in knitting, sewing, crocheting, drawing, and writing, crafts through which she expressed not only talent but also her warm and caring nature.
Her memory will be honored with a visitation on April 22, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed immediately by a funeral service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., both held at Lyons Community Chapel, located at 14805 TX-36 in Somerville, Texas. These gatherings will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and all whose lives she touched to come together in remembrance and celebration.
Emma’s family was expansive and deeply woven into the fabric of her life. She is lovingly survived by her sons Ysabel Vela, Joseph Vela and his wife Rachel, Jessie Vela and his wife Gloria, John Vela, Willie Vela and his wife Alex, Michael Vela and his wife Melinda, Christopher Vela, and Steven Vela and his wife Brittany. Her daughters include Emma Bernal and her husband Elias, San Juanita Zuniga, Margie Vela, Josephine Vela, Shirley Vela, and Lucy Vela. She also leaves behind her brother Jimmy Munoz and his wife Pat. Emma’s family grew even larger with 50 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom were blessed to share in her love and guidance.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents, Ysabel Vela; her sisters, Maria Ybarra, Otillia Perez, and Hilda Bazan; her daughter Emily Ann Vela; and by her grandchildren Leo Pena, Jacob Luna, and Sandra Vela.
Emma Vela’s life was one of heartfelt devotion—to her family, her faith, and her crafts. Her legacy of kindness, creativity, and joy in the simple moments will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know her.
