Dime Box, Texas

Doris Juanita Zimmerman Balcar was called home to be with her Savior on April 13, 2026 in Caldwell, Texas at the age of 98. Doris was born to William and Hattie Mae Zimmerman in Franklin County, Mississippi on September 6, 1927. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Balcar; her parents; sisters Helen McMellon and Lucille Gray; brother Joe Zimmerman; and sons-in-law Milbert Pokorney and Ron Elliott.

Doris is survived by daughters Jean Pokorney of Cedar Park, Texas and Shirley Elliott of Port O’Connor, Texas; grandsons Trevor (Suzanne) Pokorney of Cedar Park, Texas and Reagan Pokorney of Hume, Illinois; great-grandchildren Jake Pokorney, Rachel Pokorney, and Travis Pokorney; sisters Flo Cohee and Faye Anderson; her devoted niece, Linda Kovar; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Doris grew up in Mississippi, briefly lived in Louisiana, then moved to Caldwell, Texas in 1947. Shortly after moving to Caldwell, she met the love of her life, Frank Balcar. Doris and Frankie were married for 72 years. Doris was a devoted wife to Frankie, and a beloved mother to their daughters Jean and Shirley. Doris and Frankie loved their life together with their family and friends. They were great partners in life and on the dance floor. They especially enjoyed jitterbug and polka dancing at local halls.

The Balcars spent many years living in various cities in Texas, eventually settling in Newgulf, Texas, then Matagorda, Texas. Doris and her family loved living on the coast. She was the best fisherman in the family and made delicious seafood dishes that she shared with many others. She worked as a manager of Stanley’s Grocery Store in Matagorda for ten years.

After retirement, Doris and Frankie moved to Dime Box, Texas where she was very active in the community, including volunteering at Dime Box polling stations. They enjoyed participating in cookoffs in and around Dime Box. She and Frankie, along with four others, competed as an award-winning cookoff team known as “The Six Packers.”

Near to Doris’s heart was serving in the Dime Box Brethren Church. She was a dedicated member of the Christian Sisters, and also treasurer for Hranice Cemetery.

Doris loved big gatherings with family and friends–dancing, playing cards and dominoes, and being the life of the party. She is remembered fondly for her fun-loving spirit, her dedication to family, and her devotion to Frankie. She is dearly loved and deeply missed.
