Charles Petty, Sr.

Services for Charles Rufus Petty, Sr. 91, of Caldwell are set for 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Burleson County Cowboy Church, with Bro. Harvey Abke officiating. Interment will follow at New Tabor Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 1, 2017at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. Mr. Petty passed away July 28, 2017 in Temple, Texas.

Charles was born November 28, 1925 to Andrew C. Petty and Iva Olena (Teague) Petty in Robert Lee, Texas. In January of 1944 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during WWII until May of 1946. He married Joyce Justus on May 13, 2000 in Caldwell, Texas.

Charles enjoyed computers, playing card games, dancing at the Chriesman Community Center and listening to his favorite group Rimshot, and cruising around Caldwell. He loved the “cowboy life” and his church the Burleson County Cowboy Church. Charles was a fireman in his early life in Lubbock and he gave free hugs and advice; he was a life coach.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; son, George “Bud” Petty; and two brothers, Laverne and Dan Petty; son-in-law, Ken Graham.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Justus) Petty of Caldwell; sons and daughters-in-law, Ted & Linda of Lubbock, Bobby & Khristene Smith of Mumford, John & Marie Petty of Bryan, Doyle Petty of Caldwell; daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie & Gary Taylor of Florida, Charlene & Steve Dodson of Waxahachie, Irene Graham of Colorado City, Mary &: Tony Sleeth of Caldwell; daughter-in-law, Carol Petty of New Tabor; brothers and sisters-in-law, James & Carolyn Petty of Red Oak, Alton & Helen Petty of Brownwood; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Active pallbearers are: Marshall Petty, Tyler Sandner, Tabor Dowell, Charles Sleeth, Jr., Michael Smith, Richard Smith, with honorary pallbearers being; Brewster Sleeth, Lain Sleeth, Kevin Wilson, and Colton Wilson.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Burleson County Cowboy Church Youth Group
