Charles David Kornegay, lovingly known as “Pop” by his family, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2025, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 95. He was born November 18, 1929, in Caldwell, Texas, to William Thomas Kornegay and Pauline Cox. Charles grew up in a lively household with eight sisters and one brother, a foundation that shaped his deep appreciation for family, fun, and humor.
After graduating high school, Charles proudly served his country by joining the United States Air Force. He began his civilian career at George C. Vaughn Building Supply in Houston, TX. His passion for building led him to become a successful homebuilder, and later, he transitioned into commercial real estate.
In retirement, Charles generously gave 25 years of volunteer service to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, offering his time, care, and compassion to others. He was known for his playful spirit, infectious laughter, and remarkable storytelling—always bringing joy and entertainment to those around him. A lifelong outdoorsman, Charles found fulfillment in nature as an avid hunter and fisherman. He never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. One of his favorite pastimes was visiting the casino in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he enjoyed the excitement, the company, and the thrill of the game.
Charles was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Jeanette (Jane) Kornegay.; his parents, William Thomas Kornegay and Pauline Cox Kornegay; and siblings Buna Inez Oncken, Horace Thomas Kornegay, Winnie Estelle Miller, Corrie Doris Pillow, Patsy Jane Urbanosky, Mildred Whaley, Mattie Novasod, and Betty Marie Jones.
He is survived by his daughters, Linda Wernecke and husband Jerry, and Elizabeth Clanton; grandchildren Wesley Supak and wife Patricia, Jeffrey Wernecke and wife Kristin, Brian Wernecke and wife Deborah, and Whitney Townsend and husband Brian; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Peggy Hayes and countless family members and friends. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he nurtured.
