Services for Liobardo Vega, 58, of Deanville are set for 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 13, 2018 at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell, with Pastor Robert Tiner officiating. Interment will follow at New Tabor Cemetery near Caldwell. Visitation will be 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, August 12, 2018 also at the funeral home in Caldwell. Mr. Vega passed away on August 9, 2018 in Bryan, Texas.

Liobardo was born January 18, 1960 to Diego Vega, Sr. and Manuela (Tamez) Vega in Beeville, Texas. He married Kelly Gilbert on July 25, 1998 in Deanville.

Known for his passion for boxing, Coach Lio traveled all over the country for the sport. He was a member of “Team Unleashed” in Bryan and was a professional boxer for over 27 years.

He enjoyed joking around and having coffee with the group in Giddings at Brookshire Brothers. When the girls were young he would take them crabbing. He was a very spiritual person and loved his relationship with God. His favorite pastime was spending time with family and grandkids.

Lio was preceded in death by his father; brother, Jose Maria Vega; brother-in-law, Scott Gilbert; father-in-law, Harry “Pee Wee” Gilbert, Jr.

He is survived by wife, Kelly Vega of Deanville; mother, Manuela Vega of Beeville; mother-in-law, Claudia Gilbert of Deanville; sons, Dakota Gilbert and Jay Morales, both of Deanville; daughters and sons-in-law, Brandi & Matthew Horton of Cameron, Stormy & Jose Lopez of Caldwell, Chelsea & Matthew Hinojosa of Caldwell; brothers and sisters-in-law, Diego & Diana Vega of Corpus Christi, Raymond Vega of Laredo; brother-in-law, Command Sargent Major Donald & Kathy Gilbert of Fountain Lake, Arizona; sisters and brothers-in-law, Yolanda & David Wright of Anchorage, Alaska, Margarita & Larry Caniato of Austin, Rosalinda Flint Posada of Beeville; sister-in-law, Tammy & Alfie Simpson of Deanville; grandchildren, Tyler Williford, Kinzie Williford, D.J. Williford, Easton Williford, Savannah Horton, Madissyn Morales, Heyden Morales, McKenna Lopez, Nevaeh Lopez, Matthew Hinojosa, Cambrey Hinojosa, Isaac Hinojosa; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Horton, Matthew Hinojosa, Carl Perry, Jose Lopez, Miguel Guerra, and Jackie Perry. Honorary pallbearers are Dakota Gilbert, Jay Morales, Tyler Williford, Matthew Hinojosa, and Adrian Vega.

Memorials contributions may be made to Bryan College Station Boxing Gym, 107 E. Martin Luther King, Jr., Bryan, Texas 77802, Attention: Carl Perry.
